Today, it’s hard to imagine the early settlers of Washington County , traveling by horse and buggy to families and friends, for business and pleasure and running up against a swollen Battenkill or an ice-jammed Hoosic river. Their solution—the covered bridge—still carries us across the water as we journey through the country side.

Built in the Civil War era, four of the county’s covered bridges still remain, three of which are still in use--Rexleigh, Eagleville and Buskirk. The fourth, in Shushan, has been preserved as a museum. All are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Washington County Covered Bridge Advisory Committee is made up of citizens who work with the county to monitor and maintain these treasured landmarks. When the bridges were faced with major repairs, the committee helped apply for and win federal funds to restore rather than replace the bridges. The Committee will host a celebration when they reopen on August 4th to thank all who have contributed to this project.

If you’d like to make a donation to the Covered Bridge Advisory Committee, send your tax deductible contribution to the Cambridge Valley Community Development & Preservation Partnership, PO Box 72 , Cambridge , NY 12816 , with Covered Bridge Event written on the memo line of your check.
